Dave Gunning in Concert at Tobar Mhuire: Sunday 5th May
WE are delighted to anounce the forthcoming concert with Dave Gunning. Make plans to join us on Sunday 5th May at 7.30pm. You can check him out on youtube. What are they saying about this artist........
“Dave Gunning is the next big thing in the True North of Song, an artist as compelling, as assured and attentive to every nuance of the writing process as Lightfoot, Cockburn and Stan Rogers before him.” — Greg Quill, The Toronto Star
“It’s a star-studded affair, but at the centre of it all is Gunning with his sparse folk sound and crystal clear lyrics that have made him a popular name along the east coast and into the U.S. and Europe over the last few years”.

“Dave Gunning is a rising star in Canadian acoustic music. He’s the full package”.

We welcome with great hope and expectation Pope Francis I
There is great Hope and expectation that this Pope will help create a compassionate church that will not only welcome diversity but learn, once again, to celebrate it. We look for inspirational teaching that will draw the good out of us all and hope that the vision of Love will be at the centre of all we as a Church say and do. This is the day that the Lord has made let us rejoice and be GLAD.

Happy St. Patrick's Day
Lorica of Saint Patrick I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.
I arise today
Through the strength of Christ's birth and His baptism,
Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection and His ascension,
Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom.
I arise today
Through the strength of the love of cherubim,
In obedience of angels,
In service of archangels,
In the hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
In the prayers of patriarchs,
In preachings of the apostles,
In faiths of confessors,
In innocence of virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.
I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.
I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me;
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's hosts to save me
From snares of the devil,
From temptations of vices,
From every one who desires me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone or in a mulitude.
Dana Cooper in Concert at Tobar Mhuire Sunday 4th March
Sunday 4th March sees the begining of our 2012 Concert Series. We kick off with American singer songwriter Dana Cooper. We hope you can join us for a great musical evening. As well as having a good time you have the added satisfaction of doing a good thing.....proceeds go to the work of the Passionists at Tobar Mhuire.
Cooper’s talent has been obvious from the beginning. Signed with Elektra Records in 1973, that talent has taken him around the world, performing regularly to enthusiastic audiences in Europe and nearly every state in the Union. Always a critic’s favorite, he’s never rested on his laurels, as The Conjurer makes clear.
Often accorded the accolade of a ‘songwriter’s songwriter,’ his songs have been covered by numerous recording artists, many acclaimed songwriters themselves, including Maura O’Connell, Claire Lynch, Pierce Pettis and Susan Werner. He has been a featured performer on many prestigious TV and radio programs, including Austin City Limits and Mountain Stage, and he is a much-anticipated annual regular on the main stage at the esteemed Kerrville Music Festival. His worldwide audience includes hotbeds of Americana music in Europe, where Cooper has performed at the Belfast Songwriters Festival and tours regularly in Sweden and Denmark, often with support from the well-regarded Danish band The Sentimentals.

Lynn Miles in Concert at Tobar Mhuire
The autumn season of musical events kicks off on Sunday 16th October with Lynn Miles.
Lynn is one of Canada’s most accomplished singer/songwriters with five albums to her credit including the stark Unravel, winning Miles a 2003 Juno Award for Roots & Traditional solo album of the year and Love Sweet Love earning her multiple Canadian Folk Music awards (best English songwriter, best contemporary singer).
Her album Slightly Haunted, was a Billboard magazine Top 10 pick for the year, while Unravel was praised by All Music Guide as "sounding as if it's been produced by Daniel Lanois in an Appalichian town" and "a diamond in the rough".
Miles recently decided to record a double album of songs, entitled Black Flowers Vol.& 2, both new and old songs, in a simple fashion, accompanying her voice with either solo acoustic guitar or piano. This sparse presentation crystallizes the quality of Lynn’s songwriting – highlighting the melody and lyrics in a way that only great songs can be presented. Lynn is finishing up her new album ‘Fall for Beauty’ and is gearing up for the release this fall. The album will be released in Canada first, available in stores and online, October 12, 2010.
MORE QUOTES:
“Canadian songbird Lynn Miles sings lusciously on her fifth country-tinged, folk-pop album (Love Sweet Love). Smart lyrics abound as she expounds on love lost and gained, sketched with dark hues and rising tempos.” - Billboard Magazine
“Lynn Miles is one of the most acclaimed songwriters to cross the border since Joni Mitchell.” - Dallas Morning News
“Lynn’s music often draws on her love of literature and poetry, but her magic as a songwriter is also in her ability to take life experiences and interpret them in a way that people relate to.” - The Tennessean

The Once in Concert at Tobar Mhuire Monday September 5th
We kick off our Autumn Season of Concerts with the Group The Once. They will be playing in Tobar Mhuire on Monday 5th September at 8pm. As always proceeds are for our building fund.
The Once is a recently formed trio based out of St. John's, Newfoundland. The trio is comprised of Geraldine Hollett from Burin, Phil Churchill from Corner Brook and Andrew Dale from Coley's Point.
The trio first met in the summer of 2005 while working with the Rising Tide Theatre Company in Trinity. There they discovered a mutual appreciation for folk/traditional music, particularly for the music of their native Newfoundland and the British Isles .. Superb musicianship, clever arrangements and stunning harmonies make The Once a fresh and exciting new group whose rise will be worth watching. .. "The Once...are gifted with strong voices that tremble with richness and vitality...Their arrangements of Newfoundland and British Isles folk music are imaginative and newly minted with particularly fine a capella trio versions." --Stephen Pederson, The Chronicle Herald, Halifax .. L'Angelus in Concert Easter Tuesday 26th April 2011
As we say goodbye to Krista Detor with the hope that we see her again next year, we are already gearing up for the next musical event which is L'Angelus.
Who are L'Angelus ?
Expert musicians, incredible singers and topnotch live entertainers, L’Angelus combines the best of Louisiana’s music traditions: cajun fiddle tunes for the dance crowd, saxophone driven swamp-pop, and New Orleans influenced R&B. The result is a live show that rolls along with what Michael Doucet of Beausoleil calls “the instrumental energy of a freight train that knows no boundaries.” And the band is all from one Louisiana family. Linda Rees got the group going in the mid 90’s with her four oldest children when her husband, John Sr., took a job in North Dakota training Taiwanese flight students how to fly jet aircraft.
Katie picked up the guitar, Paige the bass, Johnny the drums and Steve the fiddle, swamp pop saxophone and harmonica. By 2002, playing as Linda Lou and The Lucky 4, the group had performed at hundreds of county fairs, rodeos, demolition derbys and coffeehouses throughout the midwest and eastern United States. “We played mostly old country songs and 50’s and 60’s rock and roll songs. Crowd pleasers.” Katie says. “But Dad kept telling us that we’d eventually get back to our Cajun roots, because in Louisiana, music is still used to bring people together.”

Happy St. Patrick's Day
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
I bind unto myself the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity;
By invocation of the same.
The Three in One, and One in Three,
Of Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.
I bind unto myself today
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three. I bind this day to me for ever.
By power of faith, Christ's incarnation;
His baptism in the Jordan river;
His death on Cross for my salvation;
His bursting from the spicèd tomb;
His riding up the heavenly way;
His coming at the day of doom;*
I bind unto myself today.
The Community would like to wish all the friends of Tobar Mhuire from home and abroad a very Happy St. Patrick's Day
We send greetings to young people who because of economic circumstances have left their country and who this year celebrate the National Saint far from their native land. We assure them that they are not forgotten and wish them well in their quest for happiness.

Passionist Assembly & Blessing of Retreat Chapel
Wednesday 26th January was the day selected for a Passionist Assembly, which this year was held in Tobar Mhuire. Passionists gathered from all over St. Patrick's Province (Ireland, Scotland & Paris). The day centred on future planning and looked at such issues as: the best use of personnel and resources. There was a huge effort on the part of everyone concerned with the building to prepare for the day. The effort was worth it, the visiting Passionists were very impressed with what they saw...particularly the Chapel. Their many comments reflected a positive attitude towards the new begining that is envisaged for Tobar Mhuire. The day began with a simple blessing of the chapel and new Icon Crucifix. During the ceremony Fr. Pat Duffy CP spoke of the challenges facing us as we work for the healing and renewal of the Church today. As the gathered Passionists sang their closing hymn the Icon was raised into position. The day continued in one of the newly renovated conference rooms. The event was reported on by the Irish News which featured the above photograph.

Tobar Mhuire - A winter delight!
Sadly we had to close...just for the next few weeks of course! We had planned to stay open throughout the entire renovation but "health and safety" issues forced us to change our plans. We are sorry that we were unable to give groups more notice, but it all happened so quickly in the end. To them we say thanks for your patience and understanding. The work seems to be all coming together... we can see the light at the end of tunnel. It's been a fairly long haul but it now feels worth it. Phase 2 (Retreat accomodation and Meeting rooms) will be handed back on the 23rd December. The final phase 2a (Chapel, Square and outdoor Stations of the Cross) will complete on the 25th January 2011 just in time for a Passionist Province Day to be held this year in Tobar Mhuire.
We are very fortunate in the staff here at Tobar Mhuire, they are entirely committed to welcoming visitors to this special place. We look forward to opening soon and hope you will make plans to visit us.

BREAKING NEWS - BREAKING NEWS -
Recent meetings with our advisors has indicated that due to increased building activity it is no longer safe to allow public access to Tobar Mhuire. Therefore we need to inform you that all services - and access to meeting rooms - will cease from Monday 29th November 2010 until early January 2011 - date to be announced. Whilst we regret having to make this decision, we believe it is prudent under the circumstances. We also believe that this action will help speed up the completion of the building project. Eilish, our secretary, will temporarily locate to a room at the front of the house and will still be available to help with Mass Cards and individual enquiries. Through this website we will keep you posted about dates and details of our re-launch in January.
BREAKING NEWS - BREAKING NEWS
Passionist Alumni : Meeting to be held in Tobar Mhuire 16th October 2010
On Saturday 16th October we will welcome a group of men who have deep associations with the Passionists. They were all once members of our Congregation. They intend to gather for conversation, reflection, storytelling, song and celebration. Some of the group will have spent time in Tobar Mhuire as students or novices, I'm sure they will be keen to see the changes and hear of our plans for the future. We look forward to welcoming this group. Perhaps following the event we can post a photo and report on their gathering.
Building newsWork on phase two has begun. Visitors will notice the erection of the new conservatory at the right side of the main house, and the new lounge and toilets are begining to emerge at the back of the retreat wing. We are hopeful that the scheduled handover of the building will take place on the 17th December 2010.
Already we have groups making bookings for various retreat weekends in the new year. We are greatly encouraged by the expressions of interest expressed by clergy from the diocese, as well as clergy from other denominations. |
